Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) — commonly summarized under the term Artificial Intelligence — promise to drive the next technological revolution in the financial industry. Complex algorithms are expected to renew and replace established processes in banking. So far, so good — but how can a computer, which operates on the basis of binary code, make autonomous decisions? And where does technological progress currently stand? The Master Class provides a thorough reality check on this topic, highlighting both the potential and the limitations of artificial intelligence through concrete real-world examples.

Background

Since 2018, machine learning has evolved into a key technology that increasingly affects the financial industry. Machine Learning (ML) refers to the ability of computer systems to improve their performance autonomously by analyzing data — without the need to follow explicitly programmed instructions. The technology offers a wide range of potential applications: from risk and investment management, underwriting, and trade execution to algorithmic trading, as well as effective fraud and anti-money-laundering prevention.

Objectives

The first step is to clarify the various terms and definitions in order to establish a shared understanding of the topic. This is followed by a detailed exploration of the technologies already available today to grasp the vast application potential of artificial intelligence in banking and finance. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the topic within its direct industry context. Where does machine learning create real added value along a bank’s value chain? What do concrete applications within the process chain look like? Is the main focus on efficiency gains or rather on process optimization? In addition, the course will examine key organizational questions and fundamental competitive aspects through insightful case studies.
